Welcome back Pegasus students! I look forward to a fun and exciting year in reading class. We will start the year reading A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. This novel tells the alternating stories of two characters, Salva and Nya, who live in Sudan but at different time periods. Using various informational texts and resources, we will explore more about the region, the struggles the characters faced and the history of the "Lost Boys" of Sudan. We will also continue our vocabulary study of Greek and Latin stems.
As a reminder, students will need a 3 ring binder (1") for class this year. A separate notebook or folder is not needed for reading class. I look forward to a wonderful year together!
Also, as Trimester 2 gets underway, some class policies have changed to help better prepare students for high school. Late work will no longer be accepted & retakes will not be allowed on formative & summative assessments. I put this policy in place as these are the expectations at GBS. Please contact me if you have any questions about the policy changes.
The year is going by so fast! During Trimester 1, we learned about and explored the Water Cycle and Space Systems. During Trimesters 2 & 3, we will be covering Forces & Interactions, Biological Changes Over Time, and Human Impact.
Moving into Trimester 2, there will be a few changes as we get closer to high school. Late work and test corrections will not be accepted anymore.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the year with you and your kids! Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.
Trimester 2 has focused on Solving Systems of Equations and also explored Functions in detail. We will then move into our Geometry unit, starting with Transformation including Translations and Rotations. Keep practicing skills using ixl. Build good habits using your math notebook and notes packet to complete homework and prepare for assessments. After school help will be available 2-3 times a week. Check the homework document to confirm which days.
Trimester 2 explored Polygons and in now moving into Similarity. Chapter 8 will examine Right Triangles and Trigonometry. We might get to start Transformations before the end of the Trimester. POM and Algebra Reviews continue to be due on a regular basis as well. Keep practicing those Algebra skills using ixl. Proof practice in ixl and posted in Schoology.
In Science we will be piloting a new program called HMH Science Dimensions to use with our units this year. Our first unit will focus on the water cycle, followed by a unit on space systems. The online program, Science Dimensions, will include projects, hands-on labs, engineering challenges, and a variety of other activities!
In ELA, we will be kicking off Trimester 1 by reading A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park. This novel tells the alternating stories of two characters, Salva and Nya, who live in Sudan but at different time periods. I look forward to the discussions we will have surrounding this novel! Additionally, we will continue our weekly Word Within the Word (Stems) lists and grammar practice using the online tool NoRedInk.
This trimester in Social Studies we will be learning about the five themes of geography and applying this information to different regions of the world. Once we become familiar with the five themes and the tools geographers use, we will move into our first unit and focus specifically on the physical features, culture, and history of Europe. Throughout the year, we will be exploring and discussing how where we live affects who we are.
